Let us Wish: Sarat Chandra Chatterjee & Agatha Christie

Posted on 15 September 2010 by admin

Agatha Christie

(15 September 1890 – 12 January 1976)

Born Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller in Devon, United Kindom, Agatha Christie needs no introduction. The youngest of three children, Agatha was initially home schooled by her mother and a series of governesses. She trained to be a singer and pianist but due to her shy nature she did not make a career of it. Duing World War 1 she worked as a nurse and then went on to work in a pharmacy; many attribute the use of poison in her novels to her experience with drugs and medicine. On Christmas Eve in 1914, Agatha married an aviator, Archibald Christie. They divorced in 1928.

Agatha started writing her first novel as a result of a challenge issued by her elder sister Madge. It was rejected by 6 publishers and took 5 years to be published. In 1920, The Mysterious Affair at Styles was  finally published and her use of poison in the mystery found mention in the Pharmaceutical Journal. Agatha met her second husband, archaeologist Max Mallowan in Baghdad in 1930. For the next 30 years she would often accompany him on digs and her experiences were reflected in her autobiographical, Come, Tell me how you Live.

Few people know that Agatha also wrote 6 romance novels under the name Mary Westmacott. Christie was the first recipient of the Mystery Writers’ of America Grand Master Award. Her novels have sold the maximum number of copies after the Bible and her books have been translated into 103 languages.

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay

(15 September 1876 – 16 January 1938)

Born in Hoogly, West Bengal, Sarat Chandra spent the first half of his life in poverty. He lived with his uncle in Bhagalpur and the place had a profound influence on his work. It was in Bhagalpur that Sarat Chandra wrote the novel Devdas. After his parents death, poverty forced Sarat Chandra to leave his studies and in 1903 he left to work as a clerk in Rangoon. On the eve of his departure, he submitted a short story under his uncle’s name. The story won the first prize and was published. This encourages Sarat Chandra to keep writing and soon his popularity led to an improvement in his financial situation. Sarat often wrote about the evils that plagued society (though he never consciously adopted a reformist agenda)  and was a disciple of Swami Vivekananda. He died of liver cancer in 1938.

A Perfect Spy by John le Carre

Posted on 02 July 2010 by Sanga

john lecarre books at www.INDIAreads.com

Magnus Pym, intelligence agent for the British, visits London after the news of his father Rick’s death. He is supposed to return to Vienna, where he and his wife Mary are currently stationed. But instead he sends his luggage on home without him. When the suitcase arrives, without Magnus, British intelligence is left to wonder whether or not Magnus has defected, taking with him information which is beyond valuable, and jeopardizing the lives of his fellow agents and intelligence network in place in Czechoslovakia. But Magnus is not behind the iron curtain; rather, he’s in Devon, along the coast, in a home where he’s known as Mr. Canterbury, an identity he has been using for a while. This time, he’s there to tell his story, racing against time, waiting for his people to come get him and bring him in. He wants to leave a record of the truth, especially for his son, Tom. What he ends up with is the life of Magnus Pym from his childhood on, reflecting especially on his relationship with his father Rick, the ultimate con man, for whom the con never stops, not even with his only son.

This novel is as close to an autobiography readers will get from LeCarre. Although his years in British Intelligence have always given undeniable weight to his stories, this book has been roundly hailed as LeCarre’s finest. As with his other books, the life of a spy is definitely not heroic. Rather, Pym inhabits a world of duplicity and the mentally dysfunctional and over ambitious. His character is very convincing and for all his sometimes frivolous duplicity and conceit, readers will still root for him. In fact, this book is more of a spy character analysis than a spy novel.

In the hands of a lesser writer, this book could have been a big unorganized mess. But with LeCarre in charge, the story’s disparate elements are deftly woven together into a whole. Some readers may find the details a bit repetitive, but the energy of the language and richness of the tale more than make up for any weakness to make this a fast paced thriller.

Readers who marvel at character development will especially find this book rich with content. Narrated alternately by Pym and the other characters who are desperately seeking him, the storyline is told by characters reminiscing each others’ exploits. Bit by bit, readers will learn everything, but still remain helpless, unable to do anything but keeping going deeper and deeper through the complexity of the different lives and feelings as they are uncovered.

The text is oozing with innuendo, suggestion and ambiguity. And as far as storytelling goes, there is gripping suspense with character development that is truly epic. This is an unreal, yet most believable journey into the life of a spy. A must read!
